وحاسبand a reckoner أعمىblind للكواكبfor the stars يرقُبُkeeps watch
Is not a blind astrologer among the greatest calamities,
Is it not absurd, a blind astrologer
and a blind reckoner watching the stars?
And a blind calculator of the stars observing
وكيفand how لأعمىfor a blind man أنto يقوّمcalculate the position of كوكباa star
ويدريand knows إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle لاحappears فيin الجوthe sky كوكبa star
And how can a blind man calculate a star’s position,
How can a blind man evaluate a planet
and know when a star appears in the sky?
And know when a planet appears in the sky

And what does he know of ‘takhb’ and declination—woe to him!
What does he know of rising and setting alas
And within him is a wearisome preoccupation with his eyes.
Preoccupied with his eyes though they cannot see

فأعمشُso a bleary-eyed man كحّالٌan eye doctor وثورٌand a bull مطببa physician
But such is the world: it changes its people,
Yet this is the world that changes its people
so a bleary-eyed man is an eye doctor, and a bull a physician.
The blind a kohl-seller, the bull nose-pierced
