among acquaintances or those who sought refuge with me.

Neither a friend to confide in, nor a companion.

لا أهل سامرّا رعوا لي ما مضى

عند الشدائد لا ولا بغداذ

Samarra’s people did not honor our past ties

Neither family of Samarra who might remember me,

in times of hardship—no, nor did Baghdad.

Nor helper at times of hardship, neither neighbor nor kinsman.
