إذا شئت أن تلقى من الناس صادقا

وفيّا أمينا صالحا غير فاسدِ

If you wish to find among people a sincere,

Faithful, righteous, uncorrupted friend,

فأما على وجه الصعيد فلن ترى

من الناس إلا حاسدا وابن حاسد

You will not see on the face of the earth

Anyone except envious and sons of the envious.

صديقك منهم في الرخاء مساعد

وفي الضرّ والبأساء غير مساعد

Your friend among them aids you in prosperity,

But in adversity and tribulation, he does not aid.

يليقك ألفاظا حكى الخزّ لينها

وأفعاله تحكي صدور المبارد

He speaks to you with words softer than silk,

Yet his actions tell of resolute betrayal.

فمن لائمي في البعد منهم تكرّما

ومن عاذلي في نفرة المتباعد

Those who blame me for keeping away from them,

And those who reproach me for being aloof,

ومن طالب منّي شهودا على الذي

ذكرت لأكفى الجحد من كل جاحد

And those who demand witnesses from me for what

I have said, so as to deny what any witness denies,

أقول له جرّب ترى ما رأيته

وتغنى بما شاهدت من كل شاهد

I say to them, "Try and see what I have seen,

And be content with what every witness has witnessed."
