If you, O deluded one, are bound to die,

If you are arrogant, you must certainly die

and bound to be resurrected, what will you do?

And certainly be resurrected, so what will you do?

أتعمرُ دارا لست فيها بخالدٍ

أتعمرُ دارا لست فيها بخالدٍ

لغيرك والموت المفرّق طالعُ

لغيرك والموت المفرّق طالعُ

Do you build a dwelling where you will not live forever,

Do you build a house where you will not live forever

for someone else, while death, the separator, approaches?

For others, while certain death comes?

فتب قبل يوم ليس فيه إقالةٌ

فتب قبل يوم ليس فيه إقالةٌ

فعمرك مذمومٌ وسعيك ضائع

فعمرك مذمومٌ وسعيك ضائع

So repent before a day on which there is no reprieve;

Repent before a day with no respite,

for your life is blameworthy, and your striving is wasted.

For your life is blameworthy and your striving wasted.

وبادر به قبل المنيّة لا تكن

وبادر به قبل المنيّة لا تكن

لدى غفلة فالموت لا بدّ واقع

لدى غفلة فالموت لا بدّ واقع

And hasten with it before death; do not be

And hasten to repent before death, do not be

in heedlessness, for death will inevitably come.

Negligent, for death will certainly come.
