If the old man loves the young woman, he has stepped

On his own two feet, willingly, toward the worst pursuit.

Just as he loves her, so her own share

Is love for a capable man, high-shouldered and pleasing.

And among companions she rejects every disappointing man,

With broken front teeth, gray-haired and hunchbacked.

And the old man with the beauty is but like one who pairs

A gazelle to a mangy beast with a crooked flank.

If the beauty is faithful to the old man in love,

Then it is for recompense, not love born of settled longing.
