إذا صحّ لي قوتي من الناس لم أبل

إذا صحّ لي قوتي من الناس لم أبل

بما فاتني من طيبات المآكل

بما فاتني من طيبات المآكل

If my sustenance from people is assured, I care not

If I can get my sustenance from people, I do not care

about the delicious foods that pass me by.

For what delicacies I have missed in meals.

فإن سهلت فالحمد لله وحده

فإن سهلت فالحمد لله وحده

وإن لجلجت فالزاد أفضلُ حاصل

وإن لجلجت فالزاد أفضلُ حاصل

So if they come easily, praise be to God alone;

If life is easy, then praise be to God alone,

and if they prove difficult, provisions are the best gain.

And if life is hard, then provisions are the best gain.

وأفضلُ معروفِ الفتى ما تحلّلت

وأفضلُ معروفِ الفتى ما تحلّلت

عراه بديّا من ذكور لغافل

عراه بديّا من ذكور لغافل

And a young man's finest kindness is that whose bonds are loosened,

And the finest quality a young man can have

unprompted, from one mindful to one unaware.

Is when he strips himself of flaws unnoticed.
