أطالب بالتنفل في السجود

وصوم الدهر في الحر الشديد

وصوم الدهر في الحر الشديد

I am required to perform voluntary devotions in prostration,

I yearn for prostration in prayer

and to fast all my days in the fiercest heat.

And fasting in the scorching heat

يصوم المكثرون كمثل صومي

يصوم المكثرون كمثل صومي

وفطرهم على ماء الجليد

وفطرهم على ماء الجليد

The wealthy fast just as I do,

Many fast like I do

but they break their fast with ice water.

Yet break their fast with iced water

وأفطر بالعشا إفطار سوء

وأفطر بالعشا إفطار سوء

على ماء كمضروب المزيد

على ماء كمضروب المزيد

And at supper I break my fast miserably,

While I break my deficient fast

on water like beaten mazīd [an unclear expression].

With water hot as spears

تعالى الله أمري فيه فكرٌ

تعالى الله أمري فيه فكرٌ

لمعتبر بليد أو سديد

لمعتبر بليد أو سديد

Exalted is God! My plight gives food for thought

My affairs perplex me

to anyone who reflects, dull-witted or discerning.

Whether I'm perceptive or obtuse

أعاقب بالغلاء وضيق رزق

أعاقب بالغلاء وضيق رزق

وأوخذ بالنقيّ من النقود

وأوخذ بالنقيّ من النقود

I am punished with high prices and straitened means,

I'm punished by high prices and scarce provisions

and made to pay in pure coin.

And taken to account for every coin

ويأتي الليل عن جزع وخوف

ويأتي الليل عن جزع وخوف

بحدّ السيف والسلب المبيد

بحدّ السيف والسلب المبيد

And night comes amid anguish and fear,

And night comes with fretting and fear

with the sword’s edge and devastating plunder.

Like a sharpened sword and destroying pillage

أرى الدنيا وفتنتها كحبلى

أرى الدنيا وفتنتها كحبلى

وليست باليؤوس ولا الولود

وليست باليؤوس ولا الولود

I see the world and its allure as a pregnant woman,

I see this world and its tribulations like a pregnant woman

yet she is neither past hope of bearing nor fruitful.

Neither hopeless nor giving birth

فليت الحامل العقاء جاءت

فليت الحامل العقاء جاءت

بمولود ولو أفعى زرود

بمولود ولو أفعى زرود

If only that barren pregnant woman would bring forth

If only this barren woman

a child—even a voracious viper.

Would deliver, even if a venomous snake
