I wrote to him with tears upon my cheek,

a letter of longing that he read by signs.

And my letter, written in tears, told

of the fierce anguish of longing I endure.

He answered with a glance of his eye, fearing a spiteful foe:

“Stay as you are; I remain faithful to the pledge.”

So I said to him with a glance, “Go no further than coldness toward me,

for coldness is easier on me than loss.”
