أرى الناس والدنيا إذا ما امتحنتها

كرقعة شطرنج عنها رجالها

I see people and the world, when I put it to the test,

I see people and the world, when I test them,

like a chessboard, its men apart from it.

Like a chessboard without its pieces.

فمن كان فيها واسع الصدر حاسبا

فمن كان فيها واسع الصدر حاسبا

أخا فطنة لا يزدهيه اشتكالها

أخا فطنة لا يزدهيه اشتكالها

Whoever in it is patient and calculating,

So whoever has a generous spirit and is wise,

a man of insight whom its complexities do not overawe,

As a brother of insight, is not bothered by its complications.

ترابح فيها ثمّ جالت يمينُهُ

ترابح فيها ثمّ جالت يمينُهُ

محالا أهال الشامتين محالها

محالا أهال الشامتين محالها

profits there; then his right hand ranges

He profits in it, then his luck turns,

through stratagems whose cunning alarms the gloaters.

Impossibly making miserable ones happy in their misery.

أجد حيلة واصبر على كل ذلّة

أجد حيلة واصبر على كل ذلّة

يواتيك من بين الحرام حلالّها

يواتيك من بين الحرام حلالّها

Devise a sound stratagem and endure every humiliation;

I devise a plan and am patient with every humiliation -

its lawful share will come to you from amid the forbidden.

What is forbidden comes to you from it as lawful.

وإلا فمت هزلا وضرّا فإنّها

وإلا فمت هزلا وضرّا فإنّها

أبت أن تصافي العاجزين فحالها

أبت أن تصافي العاجزين فحالها

Otherwise, die of wasting and want, for it

Otherwise you die lightly or heavily, for it

refuses to let its strong men befriend the helpless.

Refused to reconcile with the helpless in their state.

مفاتيح أقفال العطايا مشيئة

مفاتيح أقفال العطايا مشيئة

من الله والأسباب فيها احتيالها

من الله والأسباب فيها احتيالها

The keys to the locks of gifts are an act of will

The keys to locks of gifts are the will

from God; and the means of obtaining them are stratagems.

Of God, and within it are their means of attainment.
