قد كنت أحسبني أكدى الورى شرها

وأطمع الناس في تحصيل موعود

I once thought myself the greediest beggar among mortals,

and the keenest of men to obtain what was promised.

أرى الغزالة في بهماء مقفرة

تسعى فألقى الصلا في الجد والعود

I see a gazelle in a deserted, trackless waste,

running, and I set a roasting fire among kindling and wood.

وربّما حدّثتني النفس طامعة

في طائر الجو من بيض ومن سود

Often my soul has spoken to me, craving

the birds of the air, white ones and black.

يمرّ جاري بقصّاب يُساومهُ

فما يرى لي خبزٌ غير مثرود

My neighbor passes a butcher, bargaining with him,

and no bread of mine remains uncrumbled.

حتّى رأيت أبا إسحاق يسألني

حبراً وحبري فقيدٌ غير موجود

Until I saw Abu Ishaq asking me

for ink—though my ink is missing, nowhere to be found.

عفصي بأيدك في علياء شاهقة

يحول من دونها قطع الفراديد

My gallnuts are at Aydak, on a towering height,

with isolated peaks to cross before it can be reached.

والصمغ أصبح في تربان معدته

كم بين تربان من هبط وتصعيد

And the gum's source [text: 'belly'] is now in Turban;

how many descents and climbs lie between here and Turban!

والزاج في مصر من خلف الجفار على

بعد الطريق وتخويف وتهديد

The vitriol is in Egypt, beyond al-Jifar, with

a long road, and terrors and threats.

فإن جمعت لي الأخلاط كاملة

كما وصفت بترتيب وتعديد

So if you gather all the ingredients for me,

as I have described, in order and item by item,

فالماء يحضر عندي والعلاج له

والظرف منك معار غير مردودِ

then I have the water at hand and will prepare it;

and the vessel is lent by you, never to be returned.

ما أنجزتني الليالي وعد نائلها

فكيف تطمع في إنجاز موعودي

The nights have never fulfilled their promise of bounty to me,

so how can you hope that I will keep my promise?
