I offer my excuse to God, not to people,

My excuse is to God, not to people,

for drinking from the cup after performing the obligatory prayer.

For drinking after performing the duty with the cup.

ثلاثةٌ بعد وتري عند مضطجعي

ثلاثةٌ بعد وتري عند مضطجعي

من ماء بريّة أو دبس دبّاس

من ماء بريّة أو دبس دبّاس

Three cups after my witr prayer, beside my bed,

Three are with me after my lute strings at my bedside:

of Bariyya’s water or Dabbas’s syrup.

Water from the wilderness, or syrup from a jug.

هي الدواء لشيخ حل حبوته

هي الدواء لشيخ حل حبوته

كرّ الليالي بأدناس وأنفاس

كرّ الليالي بأدناس وأنفاس

They are the remedy for an old man whose knee-binding wrap

They are the cure for an old man whose teeth have fallen out,

the succession of nights has loosened, with stains and sighs.

Whose nights have multiplied amid vileness and breaths.

تزيل همي وتاسو ما يولّده

تزيل همي وتاسو ما يولّده

مآكل الإنس في نصب وفي باس

مآكل الإنس في نصب وفي باس

They dispel my worry and heal what is brought on by

They take away my cares and alleviate what

human fare amid weariness and distress.

The tribulations of mankind engender in adversity and ease.
