I lay sleepless from sunset until sunrise.

I endure anxious thought in the throat of distress.

And I go out each morning amid cares that never end,

And sit by the road to earn my living.

I drive care away from me with wishes,

Yet in my liver is something like a raging blaze.

I face Time in a stranger’s two robes,

Without money to count or a friend.

My tongue addresses whoever addresses me,

While most of my thought is spent worrying over flour.

And in the evening I present myself to Ibn Sima,

As the onrushing one comes upon the roots.

He served me food and demanded cash from me:

Sound coins, or broken, holed ones.

And I recite the verse of patience, relying

On relief from the compassionate King.
