I kept waiting for something to bring me joy,

I'm still awaiting what I secretly yearn

prefacing my thoughts with 'if' and 'if only'.

Offering my thoughts to wishes and if onlys

وليس في منزلي شيء أطيف به

وليس في منزلي شيء أطيف به

وبي من الجوع ما يدني من الموت

وبي من الجوع ما يدني من الموت

And there was nothing in my house for me to circle about,

Nothing in my house brings me comfort

while hunger within me was bringing me close to death.

Hunger brings me close to death's door

إذا بصوت بباب الدار تسمعهُ

إذا بصوت بباب الدار تسمعهُ

فالأذن مصغية منّي إلى الصوت

فالأذن مصغية منّي إلى الصوت

Suddenly, you could hear a voice at the house door,

When a voice at the door is heard

so my ear listened intently to the voice.

My ears strain to the sound

فقلت من ذا الذي أرجوه لي فرجا

فقلت من ذا الذي أرجوه لي فرجا

فقال أنا فرج زن لي كرى البيت

فقال أنا فرج زن لي كرى البيت

So I said, 'Who is this from whom I hope for relief?'

Who is this, I wonder, bringing relief?

He said, 'I am Faraj. Weigh out the house rent for me.'

It says, I am relief, open so I may enter
