قلوبhearts أناسpeople منfrom among أناسpeople ذويpossessing رجسfilth
I have a way in satire: with its obscenity I crush
I have a doctrine of satire against a land whose hearts are fouled,
the hearts of people from among those steeped in filth.
People from people of vileness whom fate only gave wealth,
رذالscoundrels أبىrefused المقدارfate إلاanything but الغنىwealth لهمfor them
فظنّهمso it deemed them ناساpeople وليسواand they are not منof الإنسhumankind
Scoundrels for whom fate would grant nothing but wealth;
So they supposed they were people though not of humankind,
so it took them for people, though they are not human.
If you sought coins from their hands when penniless, no way,
إذاif رمتyou seek منfrom أيديهمtheir hands الفلسa copper coin لمnot تجدyou find
سبيلاa way إذاwhen كانis السؤالthe request إلىfor الفلسِa copper coin
If you seek a copper coin from their hands, you will find no
Long has been my lifetime's accord with ill fate, so I
way, when the request is for a copper coin.
Rise up relying on good but retire relying on ill,
لقدindeed طالhas grown long عهديmy last encounter بالسعودwith good fortune فإنّنيfor indeed I
I indeed begin the morning علىin حسhunger وأمسيand I reach evening علىin نحسill fortune
Long has it been since I knew good fortune, for I
I hope for wealth in the morn but my day passes
indeed begin the morning hungry and reach evening in ill fortune.
Hoping the like, and at nightfall I hope the same,
أرجّيI hope for الغنىwealth عندat الصباحmorning فينقضيthen elapses
نهاريmy day بآمالin hopes علىwith مثلهاtheir like أمسيI reach evening
I hope for wealth at dawn; then slips away
Woe for mocking the vile wealthy folk
my day in hopes—the same hopes with which I reach evening.
When I am not one of them in perplexity or doubt,
ألامI am blamed علىfor شتمreviling اللئامthe scoundrels ذويpossessing الغنىwealth
وماand not أناI منهمabout them فيin شكوكdoubts ولاnor لبسconfusion
I am blamed for reviling the wealthy scoundrels,
And I incline to satire freely
yet I have neither doubts nor confusion about them.
So if people are mean to me I satirize my own soul.
وإنيand indeed I لأغرىam surely drawn بالهجاto satire متبرّعاoffering freely
فإنso if ضاقgrows too narrow بيfor me خلقhumankind هجوتI satirize بهwith it نفسيmyself
And I am indeed drawn to satire, offering it freely;
so if humankind leaves me no room, I turn that satire on myself.
