    ولست براض صدقها وانتقالها

    I am enamored of a world whose state I do not deny;

    Nor am I content with its truthfulness and its passing.

    Shall I yearn for it, desiring its permanence,

    When it has shown me—if only I understood—its passing away,

    Long ago, and that it is no lasting abode?

    So what have I to do with it, but for my weak judgment?

    وعمّا قليل يعرفون وبالها

    I see its people, in heedlessness, suckling at it;

    And before long they will know its dire consequences.

    ولكن أرى علمي عليها ولا لها

    Nor do I see my knowledge benefiting my soul;

    But I see my knowledge counting against it, not for it.

    And what good is knowledge that does not curb desire,

    Nor prevent the obstinate soul from straying?
