ولطفي بأعدائي وإن حمي القلب

I am blamed for my gentleness toward one I do not love,

My kindness to those I do not love

and my kindness to my enemies, even if the heart grows hot.

And my gentleness to my enemies though my heart rages

وما ضرّني سلمى ورفقي بمعشر

وما ضرّني سلمى ورفقي بمعشر

لساني لهم سلم وقلبي لهم حرب

لساني لهم سلم وقلبي لهم حرب

My peacefulness and gentleness toward a people have not harmed me:

It does not harm me to make peace with the company

my tongue is at peace with them, while my heart is at war with them.

My tongue makes peace with them but my heart wages war

إذا اضرموا للحرب نارا طفأتها

إذا اضرموا للحرب نارا طفأتها

بألفاظ خدّاع يلين له الصعب

بألفاظ خدّاع يلين له الصعب

When they kindle a fire for war, I extinguish it

If they light the fires of war I extinguish them

with a deceiver's words, before whom the unyielding softens.

With soothing words that soften the difficult

أوسط فيما بيننا صالح الرقى

أوسط فيما بيننا صالح الرقى

ولا خير في حرب توسّطها العصب

ولا خير في حرب توسّطها العصب

I appoint beneficial charms to mediate between us,

Moderation is best between us

and there is no good in a war mediated by sinews.

There is no good in a war fueled by partisanship
