    Eat less, and you will pass the night in good health,

    as one who finds solace in piety passes it.

    For seldom does a glutton lie down overburdened

    without complaining of a sudden bout of pain.

    Eating little food with dignity

    is better than delicacies in abasement.

    And a lasting life in safety and obscurity

    is better than high rank amid fear.

    And time proceeds according to its nature,

    amid the recurrence of months and weeks.

    And the longest life within it is the shortest,

    since death's arrival cannot be averted.

    And a person lives through seven stages, if

    love for wishes has not been cut off:

    والكهل بعد القويّ واليفع

    a fetus, a child, an adolescent, and a young man,

    and the middle-aged man after the strong and the young;

    واليأسُ مستخرج عن الطمع

    and gray hair and death, then 'will it?' and 'perhaps';

    and despair is drawn from greed.
