أيعجبنيDoes it please me أنّنيthat I am شاعرٌa poet
وقولand the saying of البريةthe people ماhow أشعرهpoetically gifted he is
Does it please me that I am a poet,
How strange that I'm a poet
And that people say, 'What a poet he is!'?
Yet the speech of the wilderness is more poetic
فلوfor if أرهنونيthey pawned me وشعريand my poetry معيwith me
وماand what فيin الدفاترthe notebooks وand المحبرهthe inkwell
For if they pawned me, with my poetry beside me,
If they bet my poetry and me
And what is in the notebooks and the inkwell,
And what's in notebooks and ink
علىfor قوتsustenance يومa day لردّواthey would return الرهونthe pledges
وأومواand they would gesture إلىtoward فضةsilver محضرهready at hand
For a day's food, they would return the pledges
For a day's food, they'd take back the bets
And gesture toward silver ready at hand.
And head to the money on the table
ألاAh فحرامٌthen accursed زمانthe days of الفقيرthe poor man
حرامaccursed حرامaccursed فماso how أقذرهfoul it is
Ah, accursed are the poor man's days—
Alas the time of poverty is forbidden
Accursed, accursed—how foul they are!
Forbidden, forbidden, how vile it is
إذاif كانis عيشthe life of الفتىthe young man هكذاlike this
فخيرٌthen better منthan العيشةthe life المقبرهthe graveyard
If a young man's life is like this,
If the life of a young man is like this
Then the graveyard is better than such a life.
Then death is better than a life buried
