فالرزق بين الأنام مقسوم

Do not envy a man for his wealth,

Do not envy a man of high rank

For sustenance is apportioned among mortals.

Fortunes between men are preordained

هذا بلا حيلة له نعم

هذا بلا حيلة له نعم

فائضة والحيول محروم

فائضة والحيول محروم

This man, without any ingenuity, has blessings

This one has abundant wealth

Overflowing, while the resourceful man is deprived.

While the impoverished are deprived

قد ينفق المال غير كاسبه

قد ينفق المال غير كاسبه

وجامع المال فيه مذموم

وجامع المال فيه مذموم

Someone other than its earner may spend the wealth,

He may spend money not earned

And the gatherer of wealth is blamed for it.

While the hoarder earns only blame

ويسكن الدار غير عامرها

ويسكن الدار غير عامرها

والموت بين الأنام محتوم

والموت بين الأنام محتوم

And someone other than its builder inhabits the house,

He may dwell in an uninhabited house

And death among mortals is inevitable.

Yet death for all men is fated

فانفق إذا أقبل الزمان فما

فانفق إذا أقبل الزمان فما

ضرّك جود والنحس معدوم

ضرّك جود والنحس معدوم

So spend when fortune favors you, for no

So spend freely when times are good

Generosity harms you while ill fortune is absent.

Generosity then brings no harm

وعند إدباره فلا بخل

وعند إدباره فلا بخل

يقيم عود الفتى ولا لوم

يقيم عود الفتى ولا لوم

And when it turns away, neither stinginess

When life wanes, do not hoard or stint

Nor reproach can straighten a young man's frame.

Blame not the noble man's deeds
