وهات الغنى عن كل حر وباخل
Count me among the fools and say, “He is an idiot.”
Add me to the generous, and say he is foolish,
And grant me independence from every noble man and miser.
And leave off every free man and miser;

أعاب اضطهادا لا اختيارا ولا أرى
أعابI am reproached بذلfor the abasement of السائلthe beggar المتخاذلthe fainthearted
أعاب بذل السائل المتخاذل
I am reproached under duress, not by choice, and I do not think
I blame oppression, not free choice, and I do not see
I am reproached for the abasement of a fainthearted beggar.
I blame the asking of the slothful beggar;

وأقبضُها عن طالب متطاول
I extend every petitioner toward the giver of wealth,
I stretch my hand to the giver of wealth every seeker,
And draw it back from an overbearing petitioner.
And I withhold it from the arrogant seeker.
