ونلت مالي بلا إمكاسِ

By consoling myself, I quenched the fire of favors held over me.

I quenched the fire of wishes with my despair.

And obtained what was mine after haggling.

And obtained my wealth without haggling.

صاحبتُ دهري بلا اعتراضِ

وغير حرصٍ ولا اختلاس

I kept company with Time without protest,

I kept company with my days without protest,

without greed or furtive taking.

And without greed or stealthy taking.

ولم أذم البخيل لمّا

شحّ فألوى ولم يُواس

Nor did I blame the miser when

And I did not reproach the miser when

he withheld, turned away, and offered no aid.

He was stingy, turned away, and offered no help.
