And the night has grown so long that I no longer know:

is it the night of death or the night of return?

I watch for dawn while it flees from me,

as winter turned away from spring.

So, O my sleep, you have become so elusive to me

that you have defied both reproacher and intercessor.

Ah, O sun, what has held you back from us?

And O night, you have grown heedless of bowing.

I think a lover has kept the sun company,

so the lover has distracted her from rising,

and that reflection has brought the night to a halt—

moaning and lining its eyes with tears.
