وعلّمنيand taught me لئامthe base among الناسpeople عيشاa way of life
وعلّمني لئام الناس عيشا
خلوتI secluded myself بهwith it علىin accordance with خلقthe character of اللئيمthe base man
خلوت به على خلق اللئيم
And the base among men taught me a way of life,
which I led alone, after the manner of a base man:
علىon condition ألاthat not أخالطI mingle with آدميّاa human being
على ألا أخالط آدميّا
ومنand who ذاis there بالسلامةwith safety للكريمfor the noble man
ومن ذا بالسلامة للكريم
to mingle with no human being.
And who can assure a noble man of safety?
إذاwhen لسعis stung السليمthe stricken man دعيis called سليماunharmed
إذا لسع السليم دعي سليما
وأنّيand how بالسلامةwith safety للسليمfor the stricken man
وأنّي بالسلامة للسليم
When a man is stung, he is called 'unharmed';
yet how can the stricken man be safe?
