And in the nature of this world and those who dwell on its earth

Are changes of fortune and the ending of joy.

And one of this world's wonders is your seeking a fair man,

While you are deeply unjust and stingy even with a little.

You demand affection and fidelity from the people of the earth,

Though you are contemptible, in a contemptible man's clothes.

And people gather only around one whose wealth abounds,

And one whose violent power they fear, though with aversion.

So make ready like one meeting an enemy you fear:

Then he appeared [unclear word], hostile and broken.

And wherever you turn, you will meet no one fair

And faithful, nor anyone making a joyful beginning.

Your enemy is the affectionate man who befriends you,

And your lot is to go forth with a weary heart.

Whenever you seek fairness, you return disappointed,

And if you seek help, you return with falsehood.

And no brother is like a dirham in ready cash, for it

Shields you from death, in absence and presence,

And spares you the trouble of ruinous things and their evil,

And cares for you in sorrow and in times of joy.
