a friend who came to visit me, whom I hosted

A friend visited me, I hosted him

for three nights; he left, grateful for the kindness.

For three days, then he left, praising custom

فلا تهجني واقبل قليل عطّيتي

وبعني بها عرضي وأنت المساعد

وبعني بها عرضي وأنت المساعد

So do not satirize me; accept my modest gift,

So do not spurn me, accept my meager gift

and sell me my honor for it—you are the helper—

And with it restore my dignity, for you are the helper
