بكى صبيّ فرأت أمّه

بكى صبيّ فرأت أمّه

شخصي وقد أقبلت في الباعه

شخصي وقد أقبلت في الباعه

A boy cried, and his mother saw

A child wept, and his mother saw

my figure as I approached among the vendors.

Me approaching with my walking stick

أمشي وفي كفي عصا أنقي

أمشي وفي كفي عصا أنقي

بها وأهوي ساعة ساعه

بها وأهوي ساعة ساعه

I walk, a staff in my palm, cleaning

I walk with a stick in my hand

with it, and stooping from time to time.

With which I strike here and there

ففزّعت بي طفلها فانضوى

ففزّعت بي طفلها فانضوى

خوفا إليها يظهر الطاعه

خوفا إليها يظهر الطاعه

So she frightened her child with me, and he sought refuge

So she was alarmed for her child and he

with her in fear, showing obedience.

Fled to her in fear showing obedience

وكنت أيام شبابي إذا

وكنت أيام شبابي إذا

لبست خفين ودرّاعه

لبست خفين ودرّاعه

And in the days of my youth, whenever I

In my youth whenever I wore

put on a pair of leather boots and a tunic,

Boots and an outer garment

سررت من أبصرني مقبلا

سررت من أبصرني مقبلا

بمقلة شهلاء خدّاعه

بمقلة شهلاء خدّاعه

I delighted whoever saw me approaching

I was glad when anyone saw me approaching

with a beguiling gray-blue eye.

With a swinging gait and mocking glance

فالحمد لله وشكرا له

فالحمد لله وشكرا له

قد صرت بعد الشيب فزّاعه

قد صرت بعد الشيب فزّاعه

So praise be to God, and thanks to Him:

after going gray, I have become a scarecrow.

Now after old age I have become frightening
