هَلّاwhy did you not عَصَيتَyou defied هَواكَyour passion ياO اِبنَson of الأَحنَفِal-Ahnaf
إِذwhen لاno نَصيرَhelper لِدَمعِكِfor your tears المُتَوَكِّفِtrickling
Why did you not defy your passion, O son of al-Ahnaf,
Why did you not resist your love, O son of Al-Ahnaf
when there is no one to aid your trickling tears?
When there is no comforter for your flowing tears
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom وَأُمّيand my mother ظَبيَةًa gazelle أَبصَرتُهاI saw her
تِلكَthat العَشِيَّةَevening فَوقَatop سَطحٍa roof مُشرِفِlofty
With my father and mother, I would ransom the gazelle I saw
By my father and mother, I saw a gazelle
that evening, upon a lofty roof.
That evening, above an overlooking roof
نَظَرَتshe gazed مِنَfrom السَطحِthe roof الرَفيعِlofty وَحَولَهاand around her
بيضُfair-skinned الوَصائِفِthe handmaidens كَالظِباءlike gazelles العُكَّفِgathered close
She gazed from the lofty roof, and around her
She looked from the high roof, and around her
were fair-skinned handmaidens, like gazelles gathered close.
Were white tents like hovering clouds
نَظَرَتshe looked إِلَيكَat you بِمُقلَةٍwith an eye مَحزونَةٍsorrowful
نَظَرَthe gaze of الصَحيحِthe healthy person إِلىat المَريضِthe sick person المُدنَفِgravely ill
She looked at you with a sorrowful eye,
She looked at you with a sad eyelash
as a healthy person looks upon one gravely ill.
The look of the healthy towards the ill and weak
وَلَقَدand indeed رَفَعتُI raised لَهاto her الرِداءَthe cloak مُوَدِّعاًbidding farewell
بَعدَafter البُكاءِweeping وَبَعدَand after طولِthe length of المَوقِفِstanding
And indeed I raised my cloak to her in farewell,
And I bid her farewell, raising the cloak
after weeping, and after standing so long.
After crying and after prolonged standing
إِنّيindeed I لَأَحمَدُI surely praise مَنone who يَدومُendures وِصالُهُhis bond of love
وَأَذُمُّand I condemn كُلَّevery مُواصِلٍone who maintains a bond مُستَطرِفِseeking novelty
Indeed, I praise one whose bond of love endures,
I praise those whose companionship endures
and condemn every lover who seeks novelty.
And blame all fleers, hastily departing
