مَنwhoever كانَwas لَمnot يَرَsee فِعلَthe effect الحُبِّof love فيon بَدَنيmy body
فَليَأتِنيso let him come to me يَرَhe will see مِنamong آثارِهِits traces عَجَباa wonder
Whoever has not seen love's effect on my body,
Who has not seen love's work within my flesh
Let him come to me and see a wonder among its traces.
Let him come see its wondrous traces plain
كَيفَhow اِحتِياليmy recourse لِإِنسانٍwith a person بُليتُI was afflicted بِهِwith him
يَجنيhe commits الذُنوبَsins فَإِنthen if عاتَبتُهُI reproach him غَضِباhe grew angry
How can I deal with someone I am afflicted with,
How can I scheme against a man for whom
Who commits sins, then grows angry if I reproach him?
I've been afflicted, though he reaps all blame?
يَهوىhe loves خِلافيopposing me فَلَوso if أَنّيthat I أُكَلِفُهُI bid him
عَلىdespite الظَمّاthirst مِنهُon his part شُربَdrinking الماءِwater ماnot شَرِباhe would drink
He loves opposing me; so if I were to bid him
He desires my contrary, so if I tasked him
To drink water even when thirsty, he would not drink.
To drink poison, he would not abstain
أَبكيI weep for ظَلومَẒalūm وَأَبكيand I weep for ماwhat فُجِعتُI was stricken بِهِby it
مِنهاbecause of her وَأَبكيand I weep عَلىfor قَلبيmy heart الَّذيwhich ذَهَباhas gone
I weep for Ẓalūm, and I weep for what I have suffered
I weep for one who's wronged me, and I weep
Because of her, and I weep for my heart, which is gone.
For what has caused me grief, and for my heart gone astray
