يَقولونَthey say ليto me واصِلcourt سِواهاsomeone other than her لَعَلَّهاperhaps she
تَغارُshe grows jealous وَإِلّاand if not كانَthere would be فيin ذاكَthat ماsomething that يُسَليconsoles
They tell me, “Court another; perhaps she
will grow jealous; otherwise, you may find solace in that.”
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot فيin القَلبِthe heart مِثقالُthe weight of ذَرَّةٍa mote
لِأُخرىfor another woman سِواهاother than her إِنَّindeed قَلبيmy heart لَفيcertainly in شُغلِpreoccupation
Yet by God, there is not a mote's weight in my heart
for another besides her; indeed, my heart is engrossed.
عَجِبتُI marveled لِأَبدانِat the bodies of المُحِبّينَlovers قُوِّيَتwere strengthened
بِحَملِby bearing الهَوىlove إِنَّindeed الهَوىlove أَثقَلُthe heaviest of الثِقَلِburdens
I marvel at lovers' bodies, strengthened
by bearing love—for love is the heaviest of burdens.
حَمَلتُI bore الهَوىlove حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen قُمتُI rose بِالهَوىwith love
خَرَرتُI fell عَلىupon وَجهيmy face وَأَثقَلَنيand weighed me down حِمليmy burden
I bore love until, when I rose bearing it,
I fell upon my face, and my burden weighed me down.

May God water the Bridge Gate and the entire riverbank,
as far as al-Nu'man's village and the monastery with its palms,
إِلىto الدَوِّal-Daww فَالوَحاءthen al-Waha' فَالسَيبِthen al-Sayb ذيwith الرُباhills

to al-Daww, then al-Waha', then al-Sayb with its hills,
to the far end of the archways, with a downpour reckoned scant.
مَنازِلُdwellings فيماin what lies بَينَهنُّbetween them أَحِبَّةٌloved ones
هُمُthey عَذَّبواtormented روحيmy soul وَهُمand they دَلَّهواdrove to distraction عَقليmy mind
Dwellings, with loved ones among them,
who tormented my soul and drove my mind to distraction.
كَأَنas though لَمnot يَكُنthere was بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُمُand between them هَوىًlove
وَلَمand not يَكُwas مَوصولاًjoined بِحَبلِهِمُto their cord حَبليmy cord
As though no love had ever been between me and them,
and my cord had never been joined to theirs.
بِحُرمَةِby the sanctity of ماwhat قَدalready كانَwas بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكُمand between you
مِنَof الوُدِّaffection إِلّاI ask only that ماindeed (emphatic) رَجَعتُمyou return إِلىto الوَصلِunion
By the sanctity of what once existed between me and you
of affection, I implore you to return to our union.
وَإِلّاand otherwise اِقتُلونيkill me أَستَرِحI may rest مِنfrom عَذابِكُمyour torment
عَذابُكُمُyour torment عِنديto me أَشَدُّharsher مِنَthan القَتلِbeing killed
Otherwise, kill me, that I may rest from your torment;
your torment is harsher to me than being killed.
فَلَمso not أَرَI saw مِثليsomeone like me كانَhad عاتَبَreproached مِثلَكُمpeople like you
وَلاnor مِثلَكُمpeople like you فيin غَيرِthe absence of ذَنبٍa fault جَفاshunned مِثليsomeone like me
For I have never seen someone like me reproach people like you,
nor people like you shun someone like me who had done no wrong.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَستَحييcertainly feel ashamed لَكُمfor you مِنbefore مُحدِّثٍa speaker
يُحَدِّثُwho speaks عَنكُمabout you بِالمَلالِof weariness وَبِالخَتلِand of deceit
And I truly feel ashamed for you before anyone
who speaks of your weariness and deceit.
وَكَمand how many مِنof عَدُوٍan enemy رَقَّsoftened ليtoward me وَتَكَشَّفَتand fell away
حُزونَتُهhis roughness ليto me عَنfrom ثَرىmoist earth جانِبٍa slope سَهلِgentle
And many an enemy softened toward me, revealing
beneath his roughness, for me, the moist earth of a gentle slope.
رَمانيhe shot at me فَلَمّاthen when أَقصَدَتنيstruck me mortally سِهامُهُhis arrows
بَكىhe wept ليfor me وَشامَand put away الباقِياتِthe remaining ones مِنَof النَبلِthe arrows
He shot at me; then, when his arrows struck me down,
he wept for me and put away the remaining arrows.
وَقَدand indeed زَعَمَتclaimed يُمنٌYumn بِأَنّيthat I أَرَدتُهاsought to seduce her

And Yumn has claimed that I sought to make her
yield herself to me—damnation upon such a deed!
سَلواask عَنabout قَميصيmy shirt مِثلَlike شاهِدِthe witness of يوسُفٍJoseph
فَإِنَّfor indeed قَميصيmy shirt لَمnot يَكُنwas قُدَّtorn مِنfrom قُبلِthe front
Ask about my shirt, as Joseph's witness did;
for my shirt was not torn from the front.
وَمُجتَهِداتٍand women striving فيin الفَسادِdiscord حَواسِدٍenvious women

And women bent on sowing discord, envious
of her, while she knew nothing of their designs,

joined forces among themselves and came to her
under the guise of offering advice, intent on malicious scheming.
يُعَرِّضنَthey insinuate طَوراًat times بِالتَغاضيat turning a blind eye وَتارَةًand at other times
يُعاتِبنَهاthey reproach her بِالجَدِّin earnest مِنهُنَّfrom them وَالهَزلِand in jest
At times they hinted at turning a blind eye, and at others
they reproached her, both in earnest and in jest.
وَماand not زِلنَthey ceased حَتّىuntil نِلنَthey attained ماwhat شِئنَthey wished بِالرُقىwith incantations

They did not desist until their spells won them what they wished,
and until she listened to deception and guile,
وَحَتّىand until بَدَتappeared مِنهاfrom her المَلالَةُweariness وَالقِلىand aversion
وَعَهديand my recollection بِفَوزٍof Fawz لاnot تَمَلُّshe tires وَلاnor تَقليshe hates
and until she showed weariness and aversion—
though the Fawz I knew never tired of me or hated me.
فَلَمّاthen when اِنقَضىended الوَصلُthe union الَّذيthat كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
شَمِتنَthey gloated جَميعاًall together وَاِستَرَحنَand found relief مِنَfrom العَذلِreproach
Then, when the union that had been between us ended,
they all gloated and were done with their reproaches.
وَقَدand indeed قالَsaid ليto me أَهليmy family كَماjust as قالَsaid أَهلُهاher family
لَهاto her غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I لَمnot أُطِعI obeyed فيin الهَوىlove أَهليmy family
My family had spoken to me as her family spoke
to her, except that in love I did not obey my family.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَكَالذِئبِsurely like the wolf الَّذيwhich جاءَcame واعِظٌa preacher
إِلَيهِto him لِيَنهاهُto forbid him عَنِfrom الغَنَمِthe sheep الخُطَلِdrooping-eared
And I am surely like the wolf—a preacher came
to him, to warn him away from the drooping-eared sheep.
فَقالَso he said لَهُto him دَعنيleave me فَإِنّيfor indeed I مُبادِرٌhastening
لَهاtoward them قَبلَbefore أَنthat تَمضيthey pass فَماfor not جِئتَyou came لِلعَدلِfor justice
The wolf told him, “Leave me be, for I am hurrying
toward them before they pass; you have not come to deal fairly.”
وَأَرضَتand she pleased بِسُخطيby displeasing me مِعشَراًa company كانَwas سَخَطَهُمtheir anger
يَهونَmattered little عَلَيهاto her فيin رِضايَmy satisfaction وَمِنand for أَجليmy sake
And she pleased, by displeasing me, people whose anger
she once bore lightly to please me and for my sake.
وَلَمand not تَرعَshe heeded مَمشاهاher journey وَمَمشىand the journey of فَتاتِهاher maid
إِلىto السيبal-Sayb فيin الموشِيِّembroidered fabric وَالخَزِّand silk-and-wool cloth ذيwith الخَملِpile
Nor did she give thought to her own journey and her maid's
to al-Sayb, in embroidered fabric and plush silk-and-wool cloth.
فَجِئنَso they came وَجاءَتand she came فيin الظَلامِthe darkness تَأَطُّراًswaying
كَمِثلِlike المَهاoryxes أَقبَلنَthey approached يَمشينَwalking فيin الوَحلِthe mud
So they came, and she came, swaying in the darkness;
like oryxes, they approached, walking through the mud.
فَباتَتso she spent the night تُناجينيwhispering to me وَباتَتand spent the night فَتاتُهاher maid
تُنادِمُkeeping drinking company with عَبدَAbd (servant) اللَهِAllah (God) وَالرَجُلَand the man الذُهليDhuhli
She spent the night whispering to me, while her maid spent it
keeping drinking company with Abd Allah and the Dhuhli man.
فَلَمّاthen when أَضاءَgrew bright الصُبحُdawn قُمناwe rose جَماعَةًtogether
لِتَشييعِهاto see her off نُخفيwe concealed خُطاناour steps عَلىat رِسلِa gentle pace
Then, when dawn grew bright, we rose together
to see her off, concealing our steps as we moved slowly.
إِذاwhen الناسُpeople قالواsay كَيفَhow is فَوزٌFawz وَعَهدُهاand her pledge
خَرِستُI fell mute حَياءًfrom shame لاnot أُمِرُّI make bitter وَلاnor أُحليI sweeten
When people ask, “How is Fawz, and what of her pledge?”
I fall mute with shame, saying nothing bitter or sweet.
فَكونيso be كَلَيلىlike Layla الأَخيَليَّةِal-Akhyaliyya فيin الهَوىlove

So be like Layla al-Akhyaliyya in love,
or else like Lubna, or Afra, or Juml.
