نامَ مَن أَهدى لِيَ الأَرَقا

نامَ مَن أَهدى لِيَ الأَرَقا

مُستَريحاً سامَني قَلَقا

مُستَريحاً سامَني قَلَقا

The one who gave me sleeplessness has fallen asleep,

The name of the one who gifted me sleeplessness

at ease, though he afflicted me with anxiety.

Making me restful, has made me anxious

لَو يَبيتُ الناسُ كُلُّهُمُ

لَو يَبيتُ الناسُ كُلُّهُمُ

بِسُهادي بَيَّضَ الحَدَقا

بِسُهادي بَيَّضَ الحَدَقا

If all people were to spend the night

If all people slept

with my sleeplessness, it would whiten their pupils.

With my wakefulness that blanched the eyelids

أَنا لَم أُرزَق مَوَدَّتَكُم

أَنا لَم أُرزَق مَوَدَّتَكُم

إِنَّما لِلعَبدِ ما رُزِقا

إِنَّما لِلعَبدِ ما رُزِقا

I was not granted your affection;

I was not granted your love

a servant has only what he is allotted.

A servant gets only what he is destined

غَالَهُم وُدّي فَما عَقِلوا

حينَ سَدّوا دونَهُ الطُرُقا

My love overwhelmed them, so they showed no sense

I had a heart by which I lived;

I had a heart with which I lived

so it warmed itself at love's fire and burned.

It was set aflame with love, so it burned
