The lover wrote a letter to the beloved,

And his eye is never dry of tears.

And his body has been ravaged by wasting.

And his heart obeys no one who tells him to desist.

He has grown thin as a thread from remembering you,

And his hearing catches no one's call.

    يَبكي السَميعُ لَهُ وَيَبكي مَن قَرا

    This is a letter I have sent to you;

Whoever hears it weeps, and whoever reads it weeps.

It holds marvels from a sincere lover:

Love for you extinguished him, O beloved, and he faded away.

And I endured until all my patience was spent.

And I loved you, O my soul's beloved, to my misery.

And I concealed my love for you—know this and be certain.

While love in others—may I be your ransom—has refused concealment.

Has this, then, no sanctity to be upheld?

And is there no reward for this—oh, may I be your ransom?

Jamil never loved as I have—know this

For certain—nor did the slain Urwa when he loved.

No, no—nor did al-Muraqqish love as I have when he loved

Asma, to his inevitable death and doom.

Give me your hands, then make peace with me for once,

So we may curse whoever began the estrangement, O my soul.

Send a reply to my letter, and be certain

That a letter from you is healing for me.

My greetings of peace to you, O my heart's desire,

As numerous as the stars and all the birds in the sky.
