    She passed us by, the world shining with her splendor,

    in a procession that dispenses illness and grief.

    She said, “You looked at someone else,” so I said to her,

    “By the oath of one who swears earnestly by God:

    my heart has harbored nothing that would anger you,

    except that I deliberately raised my gaze toward you.

    And if you wish it, I shall not oppose you:

    I would gouge out both my eyes so I could see no one.”

    I shall surely be wretched if we remain like this forever:

    whenever I try to set love right, it goes wrong.

    لَو كُنتُ أَبكي بِماءِ البَحرِ ما نَفِدا

    My eye never blinks without streaming tears;

    were I to weep with the sea's water, it would not run dry.

    لا شَيءَ يَشغَلُني عَن ذِكرِكُم أَبَدا

    Nor have I drawn a breath without remembering you;

    nothing ever distracts me from remembering you.

    It is as though embers of ghada wood, from what I have trodden upon,

    lie between my ribs; when I quiet them, they blaze.

    How many an envious man, O Fawz, displays his envy!

    If he knew my lot with you, he would not envy me.

    رُدّي الفُؤادَ وَإِلا فَاِقتُلي الجَسَدا

    Do not leave my body empty of my heart;

    give back the heart, or else kill the body.
