هَلّاwhy not? أُحَدِّثُكُمI tell you بِأَطرَفِabout the most curious قِصَّةٍtale
هَلّا أُحَدِّثُكُم بِأَطرَفِ قِصَّةٍ
بَلَغَتكُمُit reached you فيin سالِفِbygone الأَحقابِthe ages
بَلَغَتكُمُ في سالِفِ الأَحقابِ
Shall I not tell you the most curious tale
That ever reached you in ages past?
إِنسانَةٌa woman عَرَضَتshe offered عَلَيَّto me وِصالَهاunion with her
إِنسانَةٌ عَرَضَت عَلَيَّ وِصالَها
دَسَّتshe secretly sent إِلَيَّto me رَسولَهاher messenger بِكِتابِwith a letter
دَسَّت إِلَيَّ رَسولَها بِكِتابِ
A woman offered me union with her;
She secretly sent her messenger to me with a letter.
كَتَبَتshe wrote تُعَيِّرُنيtaunting me بِطولِover the length of صُدودِكُمyour aloofness
كَتَبَت تُعَيِّرُني بِطولِ صُدودِكُم
وَاللَهُand God يَعلَمُknows كَيفَhow كانَwas جَوابيmy answer
وَاللَهُ يَعلَمُ كَيفَ كانَ جَوابي
She wrote, taunting me over your long aloofness;
And God knows what my answer was.
