O you whose love has made me wretched,

and melted my body with torment.

This letter of mine has come

to you with what I repeat in the letter.

Send back a reply, for my

heart is mad with longing for a reply.

And take in your palm a handful

of the dust that you have trodden,

to be cast upon it; for in

it is something that quenches my burning.

And it shall be mixed into my

food as long as I live, and into my drink.

My beloved has gone—alas for my

affliction! How long my exile has lasted!

So my breast is ablaze within,

and my eye's clouds pour down.

I lament to you the yearning

    between my ribs and diaphragm.

By God, I shall not forget you so long as

riding camels run alongside riding camels.

    Death indeed visited

me the day you left with those departing.

    If you have gone—and every

    companion may come to depart—

then upon you, O my solace, be

peace; and may you feel as I do.
