O you who give no answer when asked,

And O you who give no recompense for union,

And O you whose words to me, when I complain

To you, are: 'Die of your ailment; I do not care.'

Do you not see what I endure, and take pity

On my long yearning and my wretched state?

And my two eyes have shown you that I,

Despite the long separation, do not hate you.

And I am not—even if you have begun to sever my cord—

Ever forgetful of union with you.

God be exalted! How hard-hearted you are toward me!

Such is everyone whose heart is unfettered and empty.
