O people, long has my yearning for the Hijaz endured.

And I wept from the anguish of cares that visit by night.

Indeed, I fear I may die of choking grief.

How fitting that would be, O son of Ahnaf—how fitting!

For love of a maiden, I grew absorbed in speaking of her,

For fear of parting, I became like one hanging on.

Departure drew near for her people, and they dispersed.

Had that been in my power, we would not have parted.

And it is as though we had never come together in a town,

And as though we had never met in seclusion.

And I remained swimming in the seas of love for them.

How lovely these states are—if we do not drown!

Oh, if only I had not loved you—rather, if only you

had not departed! Rather, if only I had never been created!

If my limbs complained of what ails them,

each limb would complain to you of what it had endured.

Then they would recount so much of it that counting it would overwhelm them,

and what remained would be greater still than that.

Let go of the one now far away, and do not

seek things that you have not been allotted.

Indeed, the reproachful women have spread our story,

so people are divided between those who disbelieve and those who believe.

O you who accuse lovers of lying about love,

go your own way, for you are not rightly guided.
