O my heart, why do you not desist
O my heart, why do you not cease
from a beloved now so far away?
Yearning for a beauty who wandered in her fancy?
لَهفيmy anguish وَياand O أَسَفيmy sorrow عَلَيـfor

Ah, my anguish, and my sorrow for
My anguish - how I grieve
her! How could love for her not bring tears?
For her! How can her lover not weep for her?
أُمسيI spend the evening بِغَيرِin other than بِلادِهاher land

I spend the evening in a land other than hers;
I spent the evening far from her land.
I want no one there but her.
I wanted none but her.
لَهفيmy anguish لِبُعدِat the distance of فِراقِهاparting from her
ياO لَيتَwould that قَلبيmy heart قَدalready تَناهىdesisted
Ah, my anguish at the distance her parting brings!
My anguish - because we're parted!
Would that my heart had desisted!
O if only my heart had ceased!

Impossible! How could it, when, even if told,
Alas, how could it, even were I to say:
'Choose,' it would not pass her by?
“Make your choice - let it be none but her!”

If my heart could
If only my heart could
fly out of longing, it would come to her.
Fly on wings of passion to her!
بانَتshe departed بَعَقلِwith the mind of مُتَيَّمٍone enslaved by love
صَبِّlovesick الفُؤادِthe heart قَدalready اِرتَجاهاhe hoped for her
She departed, carrying off the mind of one enslaved by love,
She appeared in place untrodden,
lovesick at heart, who had hoped for her.
Pouring passion into my heart that longed for her.
فَتراهُso you see him يَدعوhe calls بِاِسمِهاby her name
كَيماso that يُجابَhe may be answered إِذاwhen دَعاهاhe calls her
So you see him calling out her name,
So I call her name
so he may be answered when he calls her.
That she may answer if I call to her.

Oh, how lovely, oh, how lovely,
How excellent, how excellent,
as her two eyes appear before your gaze!
If she would show herself to you, her eyelids lowered,

Fair-skinned—her like has never been seen
Purer than any mortal man has seen -
by any mortal. Blessed is He who fashioned her!
Blessed is He who created her!

So she is like a sun that shone forth
She is like a sun appearing
in the land before him, and he beheld her;
In the land for him alone who saw her,

Or a pearl with the caliphs
no one knows who took her captive.
None knows who retrieved it.

A tender maiden, as though in her saliva
Her cheek is like myrrh:
were musk wafting as she sleeps—
Its sheen breathes perfume when she turns her face.

so it seems to me, and so I suppose,
As I see and reckon,
though I have never tasted her mouth.
Without having tasted her mouth.

لُend of 'the bonds' ضَعيفَةٌweak مِنهاfrom her قُواهاtheir strength
She was with us, and the bonds
She had with us a frail
drew little strength from her.
Desire - its strength was in her.

And when I humbled myself through my gaze,
And if I bowed before her glance,
seeking her approval,
Following her pleasure,

she departed—if only her parting,
She would show herself. Would that we'd never parted!
when it came, had erased her from my breast!
For she wiped her from my breast.
فَكَأَنَّنيso I am as though ذوone with غُربَةٍabsence from home

So I am like one far from home,
It's as if I'm a stranger
in a desert whose waters are salt.
In a salty wasteland that burned her trace.
قَدalready جَفَّhas dried ريقُthe saliva of لِسانِهِhis tongue

The moisture on his tongue has dried,
My tongue is dry; its saliva
and thirst is exhausting his soul.
Exhausts me, its sound echoes.

Thirsty, he lowered his bucket,
Thirsty, I let down my bucket -
for fear of death, among its buckets.
Fearing death in its hollow.
فَثَوىso he stayed يَمُدُّhe pulls رِشاءَهاits bucket-rope
وَالنَفسُand the soul تَجهَدُstruggles مِنfrom لَظاهاits burning heat

So he stayed, hauling on its rope,
I spread its rope and my soul
while his soul struggled in its burning heat,
Is exhausted by its intense heat.

until, when it rose and he kept
Until when it was raised up and
pulling it, its loops came loose.
Its shadow lengthened, it slipped from its moorings,

So he plunged and fell after it,
So it fell, and I fell after it,
groping for its moist earth.
Feeling for its coolness.

So he poured out his breath within it,
I poured out my soul in it
and his breath reached its end.
As the soul reaches its end.
