ياO هَجرُestrangement كُفَّdesist عَنِfrom الهَوىlove وَدَعِand leave الهَوىlove
لِلعاشِقينَfor the lovers يَطيبُbe sweet ياO هَجرُestrangement
O estrangement, leave love alone, and let love
O estrangement, cease your passion and leave passion be,
be sweet for lovers, O estrangement.
For lovers, estrangement, it is pleasant, let it be.
ماذاwhat تُريدُyou want مِنَfrom الَّذينَthose who قُلوبُهُمtheir hearts
مَرضىsick وَحَشوُand the contents of قُلوبِهِمtheir hearts جَمرُembers
What do you want from those whose hearts
What do you want from those whose hearts are sick,
are sick, and whose hearts are filled with embers?
And in their hearts are burning embers, fiercely quick?
وَسَوابِقُand the racing العَبَراتِthe tears فَوقَupon خُدودِهمtheir cheeks
دِرَرٌpearls تَفيضُpour forth كَأَنَّهاas though they were القَطرُrain
And the racing tears upon their cheeks
The tears flow down their cheeks in streams before,
are pearls pouring forth as though they were rain.
As if they were the rain pouring down in showers.
مُتَغَيِّرينَchanged مِنَby الهَوىlove أَلوانُهُمtheir complexions
مِمّاbecause of what تُجِنُّconceal قُلوبُهمُtheir hearts صُفرُyellow
They are changed by love; their complexions
Changing in color from passion are their hues,
are yellow from what their hearts conceal.
From how their hearts are scorched till yellowish blues.
صَرعىstricken عَلىupon جِسرِbridge الهَوىlove لِشَقائِهِمbecause of their misery
يَتَصَبَّرونَthey strive for patience وَماand no بِهِمin them صَبرُpatience
Stricken on love's bridge by their misery,
Laid low by passion’s woe upon its bridge’s span,
they strive for patience, yet have no patience.
They persevere though patience in them there is none.
لَمdid not يَشرَبواthey drink غَيرَanything other than الهَوىlove فَكَأَنَّهُمso it is as though they
بِهِمُin them لِشِّدَةِbecause of the severity of ماwhat لَقواthey endured سُكرُintoxication
They have drunk nothing but love, so it is as though they
Naught but passion have they drunk, till they seem drunk,
are intoxicated by the severity of what they have endured.
For the harshness of what they have faced leaves them sunk.
لَولاwere it not for اِعتِراضُthe obstruction of الهَجرِestrangement فيin طُرُقِthe paths of الهَوىlove
دَخَلَwould enter المُحِبَّthe lover مِنَfrom الهَوىlove كِبرُpride
Were it not for estrangement blocking the paths of love,
If not for estrangement barring passion’s path crossed wide,
pride born of love would enter the lover.
The lover unto passion would have fully been tied.
