O Abu al-Fadl, the traces have stirred you,

after Fawz's departure, as though they were tattoos.

My anguish at losing Fawz, and my fear

for her—while time is a ruthless tyrant—

are Jacob's anguish after losing Joseph, when

grief whitened his eyes, and he stifled his sorrow.

And my joy at seeing her is like the joy

    Abraham felt at Isaac's ransom.

The heart is in Iraq at dawn, and at dusk

love is in the Hijaz—how can there be bliss?

Fawz is in the Hijaz at dawn, while Abbas,

    Abu al-Fadl, resides in Iraq.

    تِ فَما حَولَهُ حِمىً مَكلومُ

    She has dug trenches of yearning around his heart;

so what surrounds it is a wounded sanctuary.

    Indeed, between al-Baqi' and Buthan

there is a dwelling where love is concealed.

    بِأَبي دَمعُ عَينِها المَسجومُ

    I cannot forget her weeping on the day they departed;

may my father be ransom for the streaming tears of her eye!

    إِنَّ طَرفي عَلى فُؤادي مَشومُ

    My gaze drove calamities into my heart;

my gaze is surely ill-omened for my heart.

    هُوَ بِالشَوقِ وَالضَنى مَختومُ

    Love has written a letter in my heart;

it is sealed with longing and wasting sickness.

May God protect those who parted from me,

who, in love, obey no faultfinder.

Would that I knew: will they return to us,

so we may see them, or do they intend to remain?

If weeping over them can do any good,

then weep until you die, O bereft one.

May God bring Fawz and Abbas together,

so that a noble woman and a noble man may find happiness.

The mountains cannot bear, O people,

what human bodies bear of love.

Will you join me in rising to weep together

and tear our collars? By God, rise!

And bear witness: I have vowed, if Fawz

remains constant in what gladdens my eye,

a pilgrimage on foot, and the freeing of all I

own, in gratitude; and I shall fast as long as I live.

Would that I knew: do you remember me as I remember

you, or is your pledge one that does not last?

Would that, whenever I remembered you, O Fawz,

by day, or when the stars appear,

I had the sleep of the sleepers in the cave, when

their cave and al-Raqim were watched over and kept safe.

    طالَما قَد نَفَعتِني يا ظَلومُ

    Intercede for me with Fawz, O Zalum;

you have so often helped me, O Zalum.

May God sicken her heart, just as He has sickened

my heart, for my heart is sick.

She claimed in her letter that I had chosen

another in her place, and that my loyalty was shameful.

May God have mercy on whoever prays for me when he rises

to pray, for I have been wronged.

No, by the Lord of the pilgrims to the House, sped onward

by pale camels worn lean by their swift trot—

I have not changed since Fawz's departure, nor has

my heart been enthralled by anyone but Fawz.

May God curse every lover who walks about

with his heart divided among people.

Is it just to count my longings

as sins? Such is Sadum's judgment.

If you count my love a sin, then I

call God to witness that my sin is great.
