My elbows drew away from the pillow,

as though thorny qatad grew upon it.

Ah, who will buy sleeplessness with sleep,

and strip his eye of slumber's robe?

The night's sleeplessness dragged on for me until

my eyes lay anchored in the sea of sleeplessness.

And my eye spent the night raining tears,

and the spring of tears wells up from my heart.

As though my eyelids had enjoined one another

not to meet until the Day of Calling.

So if slumber were offered for sale,

I would make slumber costly for everyone.

By your life, Fawz's arrival did not gladden you,

nor did she lavish fine provisions on you.

Her estrangement is renewed every day,

yet her persistence in it does not last long.

And had her aversion been real, I would have left her,

and we would not have lived together in the same land,

for fear that people would say we

had ended the affection between us in discord.

And she was in the Hijaz, so I hoped

that affection would be preserved for her return.

And had I feared estrangement where she settled,

I would have been content for her to remain far away.

Ah, my grief for myself after Fawz,

and how long my exile and my solitude!

As though I had never plunged into the depths of terror,

with glances serving as a guide for her watcher.

I race ʿAjān to reach her, walking

    slowly, my sword-belt swaying.

And we were two lovers with pure affection,

and a kindled fire blazing within our ribs.

And we never retired for the night until

we had made a pledge to meet.

Then time changed her, and everything

comes to change and an end.

Indeed, by the she-camels dancing through every pass,

bound for the House through wasteland and valley,

your love has surely captured my heart,

so it lodged in my heart's sheath and in my heart.

And if I wished, I would be joined in love by

women of good sense, thirsty for union with me:

noble women among your father's daughters, inclined

    toward me, affectionate and yielding.

So I came to you thirsty, to quench my thirst,

but you had no moisture for one athirst.

And it was not through ignorance that I left the sea behind me,

and came to you to suck at scant pools.

And time has indeed turned Yumn against me,

and I had relied on her intercession.

And Isa divulged my hidden secret,

so he became one of my new enemies.

And the women in love began to gloat,

and I had been struggling with those women in love.
