تَعِسَmay it perish الغُرابُthe crow لَقَدindeed جَرىaugured بِفِراقِof parting
هَلّاwhy did it not جَرىaugur بِتَزاوُرٍof mutual visits وَتَلاقِand reunion
May the crow perish: it has indeed augured parting.
The crow laments, it flew with parting
Why did it not augur mutual visits and reunion?
If only it flew with visiting and meeting
كَيفَhow التَخَلُّصُescape مِنfrom هَواكِlove for you وَإِنِّماwhen indeed
أَخَذَtook الإِلَهُGod عَلىconcerning الهَوىlove ميثاقيmy pledge
How can I escape my love for you, when indeed
How to be free of your love, when God
God has taken my pledge to love?
Took from me a pact on passion
وَرَضيتُand I was content بَعدَafter تَنَكُّبيmy shunning طُرُقَthe paths الهَوىof love
أَنthat قيلَit was said صاحِبُbearer رايَةِthe banner العُشّاقِof lovers
And after shunning the paths of love, I was content
And I was content after shunning the ways of love
to be called the standard-bearer of lovers.
To be called the banner holder of lovers
قَدindeed كُنتُI was أُشفِقُI feel apprehensive قَبلَbefore أَنthat يَقعَtake hold الهَوىlove
لَوif only كانَhad been عَنيto me مُغنِياًof any avail إِشفاقيmy apprehension
I had indeed been apprehensive before love took hold—
I used to fear before falling in love
if only my apprehension had been of any avail to me!
If only fear could protect me
