تَعِسَmay he be wretched المُستَقِلُّthe one who deems them few خَمسَfive لَيالٍnights
تَعِسَ المُستَقِلُّ خَمسَ لَيالٍ
لِمُوافاةِfor meeting مَنthe one who بِأَرضِin the land of العِراقِIraq
لِمُوافاةِ مَن بِأَرضِ العِراقِ
May misery befall him who deems five nights a short time
to meet the one in the land of Iraq.
لَمdid not تَطُلbe long غايَةُthe span المَسيرِof the journey عَلَيهِfor him
لَم تَطُل غايَةُ المَسيرِ عَلَيهِ
إِنَّماonly طولُهاits length عَلىfor العُشّاقِlovers
إِنَّما طولُها عَلى العُشّاقِ
The journey’s span was not long for him;
it is long only for lovers.
