    Lo, O radiant moon,

    Look with both your eyes—do you see?

    لَعَلَّكَ تَبلُغُ أَو تَخبُرُ

    Behold the one who resembles you in beauty;

    perhaps you may reach him or come to know him.

    For I bring him to you by myself,

    and I confide to you what I conceal.

    Zubālah lies this side of him, and al-Shuqū-

    q, and al-Thaʿlabiyyah and al-Ajfur.

    وَما أَستَفيقُ وَما أَصبِرُ

    And absence has grown long, and the beloved is far away;

    and I neither regain my senses nor find patience.

    And my heart finds solace in longing,

    and my eye is averse to sleep.

    O you who foolishly reproach me over Ẓalū-

    m—may you be no more, if you do not excuse me.
