إِنّاindeed, we مِنَfrom الدَربِthe road أَقبَلناwe came نَؤُمُّكُمُwe head toward you
أَنضاءَworn-out ones شَوقٍlonging عَلىupon أَنضاءِworn-out mounts أَسفارِjourneys
Indeed, we came from the road, heading for you,
From the road we came seeking you
worn thin by longing, on mounts worn thin by journeys.
Yearning over years of travel
فَقَلَّماand scarcely مَتَّعوناthey let us enjoy بِالمُناخِwith a halt بِكُمwith you
حَتّىbefore اِستَقَلَّتthey rose to depart وَقَدand already شُدَّتhad been strapped بِأَكوارِwith camel saddles
And scarcely had they let us enjoy a halt with you
Rarely did you allow us to enjoy your company
before the mounts rose to depart, their saddles already strapped on.
Before the camels were loaded up to depart
وَالصَبُّand the lovesick man لابُدَّmust أَنthat يَشكوhe complains of صَبابَتَهُhis ardent longing
إِذاwhen تَبَدَّلَhe exchanges غَيرَother than الدارِthe dwelling بِالدارِfor the dwelling
And the lovesick man must complain of his longing
Youth must complain of its tribulation
when he exchanges home for another dwelling.
When dwelling after dwelling replaces home
