إِنّيindeed I لَأَطويI surely fold away الهَوىpassion كَيso that لاnot يُطيفَmay hover بِهِaround it
ظَنٌّsuspicion وَأَجحَدُand I deny ماwhat أَطويI fold away إِذاif اِنتَشَراit spreads
Indeed, I fold my passion away, lest there hover around it
I strive to conceal this passion lest
any suspicion; and I deny what I conceal if it becomes known.
Suspicion spread of what I try to veil.
حَتّىeven أَغُمَّI distress بِمَنwith one whom لاnot أَشتَهيI desire بَصَريmy sight
عَمداًdeliberately وَأَصرِفَand I turn away عَمَّنfrom one whom أَشتَهيI desire البَصَراthe gaze
I even distress my eyes with one I do not desire,
I turn my eyes from her I wish to see
deliberately, and turn my gaze from the one I desire.
And force myself to gaze on her I'd fail.
تَرميهِit casts at him بِالوُدِّwith affection عَينٌan eye لَستُI am not أَملِكُهاI control it
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen نَظَرَتit gazed بَغَّضتُهاI made it loathe النَظَراgazing
An eye I cannot control casts affection at him,
Against my will, my eyes still dart their shafts
until, when it gazes, I make it loathe gazing.
Of love for her; I cannot make them flail.
