لَوif كُنتِyou were عاتِبَةًreproachful لَسَكَّنَwould soothe لَوعَتيmy anguish
أَمَليmy hope رِضاكِyour favor وَزُرتُand I would visit غَيرَnot مُراقِبِwary
If you were reproachful, my anguish would be soothed
by my hope of your favor, and I would visit without fear.
لَكِنbut مَلَلتِyou grew weary فَلَمso ... not تَكُنbe ليfor me حيلَةٌrecourse
صَدُّrejection المَلولِof one grown weary خِلافُunlike صَدِّthe rejection العاتِبِof one who reproaches
But you have tired of me, and I have no recourse.
The rejection of one grown weary differs from that of one who reproaches.
ماwhat ضَرَّharm would it do مَنthe one who قَطَعَcut off الرَجاءَhope بِبُخلِهِthrough his stinginess
لَوif كانَhe had عَلَّلَنيkept me hoping بِوَعدٍwith a promise كاذِبِfalse
What harm would it have done the one who cut off hope through his stinginess
if he had kept me hoping with a false promise?
أَلهَمُّsorrow أَصبَحَhas become ياO ظَلومُcruel one مُقارَنيmy companion
وَالهَمُّand sorrow شَرُّthe worst مُقارِنٍassociate وَمُصاحِبِand companion
Sorrow has become, O cruel one, my companion;
and sorrow is the worst associate and companion.
