أُمِرتُI was commanded بِكِتمانِto conceal الَّذيthat which لَوif أَشَعتُهُI divulged it
فَأَظهَرتُهُand then I revealed it لَمdid not يَعلَمِknow الناسُthe people مَنwhom أَعنيI mean
I was commanded to conceal what, were I to divulge it
And reveal it, people would not know whom I mean.
وَلَكِنand yet سَأُخفيI shall hide ماwhat كَتَمتُI concealed تَجَلُّداًwith fortitude
وَلَيسَand there is not لِأَسرارِfor the secrets of المُحِبّينَthe lovers كَالدَفنِlike burial
Yet I shall hide what I have kept secret, steeling myself,
And nothing compares with burial for lovers' secrets.
سَأَسكُتُI shall keep silent كَيلاso that ... not يَعلَمَknow الناسُthe people مَنطِقيmy speech
وَنَسلَمَand we may be safe مِنfrom أَهلِthe people of الوِشايَةِmalicious gossip وَالظَنِّand suspicion
I shall keep silent so people will not know what I say,
And we may be safe from those given to malicious gossip and suspicion.
أَلاah قَدindeed جَنىbrought طَرفيmy gaze عَلَيَّupon me بَلِيَّةًa calamity
أَعوذُI seek refuge بِكَin You اللَهُمَّO God مِنfrom شَرِّthe evil of ماwhat يَجنيit brings
Ah, my gaze has brought calamity upon me;
I seek refuge in You, O God, from the evil it brings.
أَسَيِّدَتيO my lady هَلis there مِنany سَبيلٍa way لِنَظرةٍfor a glance
كَنَظرَتيlike my glance الأولىthe first وَإِنand even though هِيَit لَمdid not تُغنِhelp
O my lady, is there any chance of a glance
Like my first glance, even though it did me no good?
وَكَيفَand how تُجيبونيyou answer me إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle سَأَلتُكُمI asked you
وَلَيسَand is not لَكُمyours شَوقيmy longing وَلاnor عِندَكُمwith you حُزنيmy sorrow
And how can you answer me when I ask you,
While you share neither my longing nor my sorrow?
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَشقىsurely the most wretched الناسِthe people إِنif دامَpersists ماwhat أَرىI see
عَلىas ماwhat أَرىI see لاnot يَنقَضيends أَبداًever عَنّيaway from me
And I am surely the most wretched of people, if what I see endures
Just as I see it, never coming to an end for me.
أَلاah لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether أَموتُI shall die بِغُصَّتيwith my choking grief
وَلَمand did not أَتَمَتَّعI enjoy مِنfrom حَديثِكِyour conversation فيin أَمنِsafety
Ah, if only I knew: shall I die with my grief choking me,
Without having enjoyed your conversation in safety?
