I thrilled with longing for a sun that, when it rose,

Had its rising places deep within secluded chambers.

A sun embodied in the form of a maiden,

Her waist seems like a tightly rolled scroll.

She belongs to humankind only by kinship,

And to the jinn only in pictured likeness.

For her body is of pearl, and her hair of darkness,

And her fragrance is of musk, and her face of light.

Beauty has bestowed its robe of honor on Fawz,

Perfectly fitted, and favored her with a fair complexion.

As though, when she walks among her handmaids,

She were treading on eggs or green glass flasks.

I was told she screamed when she saw a lion

On a ring—they had portrayed it so vividly!

O my two companions, listen to my dream:

I saw, in the first light of dawn,

As though Fawz, on a horse, were handing me

A wreath of fragrant henna blossoms, like dinars.

Praise be to God for this! She has placed

Her fate in my palm—how fine my interpretation!

I surely await my dream's fulfillment, full of hope,

And the outcome comes, whether early or late.

Blessed is an eye that sees Fawz when it closes,

And the eye is gladdened by her to the utmost.

Do not forsake me in my suffering—by your lives!

For my soul truly pities everyone forsaken.

I see myself and my companions assembled

At a well-attended gathering in upper Karkh.

I wept in rapture at the music, just as

One choked with grief weeps at a beautiful reminder.

And the lover weeps in his intoxication,

When the sounds of bass and treble strings answer one another.

O Fawz, but for you I would never cease rejoicing,

Taking refuge with amiable, fair, dark-eyed maidens like statues.

O Fawz, your people reproached me, so I told them:

'Return my heart, and I will leave you without being driven away.'

God knows that I am sincere toward you,

To my utmost, yet my striving goes unthanked.

May God banish none but me, since I led to you

My soul, and sold you my serenity for my distress.

O Fawz's people, is there no relief for me with you,

Alas for me, nor respite from my prolonged chastisement?

    نَفسي الفِداءُ لِتِلكَ الدور مِن دورِ

    O Fawz's people, bury me among your houses;

My soul be a ransom for those houses, of all houses!

They kept urging on a soul, unruly as it was,

Until, when they despaired, they told it, 'Go on.'
