هَجَرتُI left النَدامىthe drinking companions خَشيَةَfor fear of السُكرِdrunkenness إِنَّماindeed
يُضيعُlets slip الفَتىthe young man أَسرارَهُhis secrets حينَwhen يَسكَرُhe becomes drunk
I left my drinking companions for fear of drunkenness, for indeed
A young man lets his secrets slip when he is drunk.
وَقَدand indeed خيرَwas deemed better ليfor me فيin الهَجرِseparation لَوif كُنتُI were صابِراًpatient
وَمَنand who ذاthis one عَلىin the face of هَجرِseparation from الأَحِبَّةِloved ones يَصبِرُcan endure
And parting would have been better for me, had I been patient;
And who is there who can endure separation from loved ones?
أُجَرِّبُI test بِالهِجرانِthrough separation نَفسيmy soul لَعَلَّهاperhaps it
تُفيقُit sobers up فَيَزدادُyet grows الهَوىlove حينَwhen أَهجُرُI stay away
I test my soul through separation, hoping it
Will sober up; yet love grows whenever I stay away.
وَأَحذَرُand I fear أَنthat تَطغىshe grows haughty إِذاif بُحتُI confess بِالهَوىof love
فَأَكتُمُهاso I conceal from her جُهديwith all my effort هَواهاlove for her وَيَظهَرُyet it shows
And I fear she will grow haughty if I confess my love,
So I hide my love for her from her with all my might, yet it shows.
أَغارُI am jealous عَلىover طَرفيmy gaze لَهاfor her وَكَأَنَّماand as though
إِذاwhen رامَseeks طَرفيmy gaze غَيرَهاanyone other than her لَيسَdoes not يُبصِرُit sees
I jealously guard my gaze for her, and it is as though
When my gaze seeks anyone but her, it cannot see.
وَماand not عَرَضَتpresented itself ليto me نَظرَةٌa glance مُذsince عَرَفتُهاI knew her
فَأَنظُرُso I look إِلاّexcept that مُثِّلَتshe is pictured حَيثُwherever أَنظُرُI look
And since I knew her, whenever I have had occasion to glance,
I look, and her image appears wherever I look.
فَياso, O واثِقاًone who trusts مِنّيin me بِماbecause of what قَدindeed بَداhas appeared لَهُto him
وَأَكثَرُand greater مِنهُthan it ماwhat أُجِنُّI conceal وَأُضمِرُand harbor inwardly
So, O you who trust me for what you have seen—
Yet what I hide and harbor is greater than that—
تَفَكَّرreflect فَماfor not تَدريyou know لَعَلَّكَperhaps you تُبتَلىwill be afflicted
بِماwith what بيis in me وَيَصحوand sobers up عَنكَfrom you قَلبيmy heart وَيَصبِرُand grows patient
Reflect: you do not know; perhaps you will be afflicted
With what I suffer, while my heart sobers from love of you and grows patient.
أَراجِعَةٌreturning? تِلكَthose اللَياليthe nights كَعَهدِناas we once knew
بِهِنَّof them وَمِصبَاحُand the lamp المَوَدَّةِaffection يَزهَرُshines
Will those nights return as we once knew
Them, with the lamp of affection shining?
إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِستَقَلَّتshe rises رَدَّهاholds her back عَنfrom قِيامِهاher standing
لهاshe has عَجُزٌbuttocks عَنهُof covering them المَآزِرُthe waist-wraps تَقصُرُfall short
Whenever she rises, she is held back from standing
By her buttocks, which waist-wraps fall short of covering.
أَلاlisten! أَيُّهاO you الناهونَthose who forbid عَنهاaway from her سَفاهَةًfoolishly
قَدِindeed اِزدادَhas increased وَجديmy longing مُذsince نَهَيتُمyou forbade فَأَقصِرواso desist
Listen, you who foolishly bid me keep away from her:
My longing has grown since you forbade me, so desist.
