ماnot مَرَّpassed مِثلُlike الهَوىpassion شَيءٌanything عَلىover راسيmy head
I have experienced the hardships of this world;
I have endured the calamities of this life,
Nothing like passion has passed over my head.
Yet nothing has passed over my head like love.
عَذابُthe torment of هاروتَHarut فيin الدُنياthe world وَصاحِبِهِand his companion
أَلَذُّsweeter مِنthan حُبِّthe love of بَعضِsome الناسِpeople لِلناسِfor people
The torment of Harut and his companion in this world
The torment of Harut in this world and his friend,
Is sweeter than some people's love for others.
Is more delightful than the love of some people for others.
لِلحُبِّlove has كَأسٌa cup مِنَof الرَوعاتِterrors مُترَعَةٌfilled to the brim
فَكُلُّso everyone مَنwho كانَwas ذاpossessing طَرفٍsight بِهاfrom it حاسِa drinker
Love has a cup brimming with terrors;
For love there is a cup brimming with tremors,
So everyone with sight drinks from it.
So whoever has an eye for it will sense.
مَنwhoever بايَعَbargained with الحُبَّlove لَمdid not تَربَحprofit تِجارَتُهُhis trade
إِذاwhen رَماهُstruck him الَّذيthe one whom يَهواهُhe loves بِالياسِwith despair
Whoever bargains with love gains nothing from his trade
Whoever pledges love, his trade will not profit,
When the one he loves strikes him with despair.
If who he loves casts him into despair.
